Maybe Tomorrow

A Noise was heard in the corridor,
His blue eyes opened wide,
A smile was ready upon his lips,
To welcome you inside.

The click of the heels echo down the hall,
Louder, closer, near,
Is it just the nurse delivering meds,
Or someone he holds dear?

A person in white flashes past his door,
His eyes lose their luster and gleam,
he resumes his vigil at the window,
Back to his memories and dream.

Turkey and dressing for lunch today,
The food trays come and go,
Or just a moment, he did think,
Was that meal a week ago?

He spilled some soup upon his shirt,
A clean one should he don,
He glaces at the setting sun,
The day is passing on.

No, he’ll save the clean for the morrow,
They say it is Father’s Day,
And he knows his children,
Will surely pass his way.

His mind drifts back to yesterday,
When the children were babes in arm,
He’d rock and sing to them softly,
And protect them from all harm.

He drifts off with a smile upon his face,
he must never give up hope,
Without his dreams for tomorrow,
He knew he could not cope.

The morning sun struck his sleeping face,
A frown had replaced his smile,
His dreams were full of reality,
They had taken him many a mile.

The clean shirt hanging in his closet,
Was donned with desire and trust,
he again took his place near the window,
Their visit today was a must.

A Noise was heard in the corridor,
His blue yes opened wide,
A smile was ready upon his lips,
To welcome you inside.
