If Only You Knew

See that girl?
She’s so indestructible
Nothing can hurt her
No one can get
Into that little world she’s built
From shame filled memories

She used to thirst for a place
Deprived
Of such forceful winds
So long she’d been
Running
From the burn they left

Stone after stone
She built up her walls
Everyday-
With every side glance
From the paper bag faces
That made her tears burn

Stone after stone
She built up her walls
Covering her scars
With little white lies
And so her clouds
Became her new sunshine

Day after day
Smiles plastered on the wall
Cracks in the foundation
Sealed with duck tape
So that walking through
You’d never know….
