Emily Told Me

Emily told me to tell the truth,
But to tell it slant.
For the truth may blind some.
I asked her, how will we understand,
The world to its fullest,
If we are not first blinded?
I asked, are baby birds are not first taught to fly,
By being pushed out of the nest?
Is it not true that one can obtain knowledge,
without the loss of innocence?
Emily did not answer my question,
And as I stared down at the page,
She only reiterated her former statement,
Emily told me to tell the truth,
But tell it slant.
