I'm Chivalrous

I felt him look at me,
Expectant.
I froze,
After a quick calculation...

I doubted it.
I reached up,
Pressing my fingers over the key around my neck.
Too Perfect.

"I'm chivalrous."
I jumped,
Suddenly jerked back to the present.
"Chivalry's dead," I said.

He stepped back,
Putting a hand over his chest.
"Would I lie to you?"
"I'm overwhelmed."

"That's not true."
"Maybe you just don't know me."
"Maybe," he agreed.
He looked embarrassed.

"Are you serious?"
He was in.
Inside,
The yellow house.

"Ignore it if you want."
"Why are you here?" I asked.
"Why was she yelling at you?"
"I didn't take it personally."

"You were jumping a fence," he said.
"Mystery solved."
"You're awfully good-natured about it, considering."
"A lot could change between now and then."

"I don't miss her," he said.
"Pining isn't attractive," I said.
"Relationship 101," he repeated, skeptical.
"Ignore it if you want."

Cora was right.
I was a mystery.
Rolling haze,
Banged-up Subaru.
