The Marooned Maroon Balloon

Like a little boy
I beg and plead
For mommy to by me a balloon
As if it's something I need

She knows the outcome
But she buys it anyway
Because she doesn't
Want to ruin my day

The one she buys is maroon
It glistens in the sunlight
It's a pretty maroon balloon
Not one that I might

Just let go
Like I always do
But something in me
Says I have to

So with a smile
I set it free
It rises for a while
And waves back at me

I watch until it's gone
Barely a speck, much less a balloon
It will surely pop before long
But it's liberty, in the sky, will stay marooned.
