The Gift of A Friend

She smiles when she walks alone
They think she’s happy
Nobody knows.

A smile can hide anything
A broken heart
A broken wing

Without a heart she cannot feel
Without some hope
It will not heal

She smiles, and she walks away
No one cares
Or looks her way.

She cannot take it anymore
She drops her books
Down to the floor.

Without a friend right by her side
The world continues
Passing by.

She makes a plot to run away
Past the darkness
To go astray

Bursting out the classroom doors
Down the hallways
To the bottom floor.

She’s going home
Somewhere to hide
She isn’t going to need an alibi
No one can stop her

No one will try
She knows they will all
Leave her to die.

There is a knife to her neck
She’s going to do it
Taking a final breath.
A sudden movement
Then the telephone rings
And it rings again
‘Betsy Rose’ is what it said.

She picked it up with a soft ‘hello?’
The girl said ‘where have you been? you left alone’
She took a deep breath and began to cry

‘Nowhere’ she said ‘and you care...why?’
‘I was worried about you
You seem so sad
I don’t want to see that
In my only friend.’

She put the knife down
And whispered goodbye
And ran to get help
She ran with a smile

Now she’s happy to be able to live
Because everyone knows
Friendship is the best gift you can give.
