Couldn't Leave Her Alone

My friend invited me over one day,
So I got out the smile to wear on my face.
It was going well,
We were happy, laughing.
But her dad screamed at her brother,
And I saw the pain flash through her eyes.
We ignored it and kept cackling,
At the stupid things we saw.
He called his son and greedy bastard,
And threw at him, a remote.
More pain, more shame,
And she muttered in an undertone,
“I fricken’ hate my father,
He’s the only one to blame.”
I nodded to myself in agreement,
And then we continued to talk.
Till he came in and set her fuse off.
I watched as he yelled at her,
“Your mother won’t get any sleep,
You kids are taking all she has.”
But I knew her mother better,
She only wanted the best for my friend.
Yet her father thought she’d better,
Go to work, then get some rest.
He asked her why she missed the friends,
That she hardly saw anyways.
And she shook her head sadly,
Then merely said,
“They’re my friends, why wouldn’t I?”
He yelled another minute,
And then left her alone.
But my friend could no longer stand it.
She put on some music,
And buried her head in her arms,
Then began to weep to the songs.
I got her a tissue, and she wiped off her face.
I invited her to stay at my place,
Because who knows what she would’ve done,
If she had to sit there alone.
