He wonders sometimes, if the angels he prays to allowed her to die because she was too perfect for the world that Sam knows. Or maybe they envied her that smile she gave him sometimes; the one that reached all the way up into her eyes, where the world stretched out in front of them into eternity. Not the world as it was, but the world that it should be: perfect, forever.

The light that shone from her - the sun perhaps, or an angel's grace - it was too bright to conceal from fate's jealous gaze. Because when they were together, Sam was in heaven. And they couldn't have that, because heaven was always just another way to spell dead. At least, that was how he'd learned it, something he'd never been able to reconcile with the hours spent drowning in blue eyes as endless as the sky.

It was only natural then, that a demon would come for her. Black, roiling clouds of murk to put out the light that had somehow found it's way to earth. The angels stood by, watched as Jessica learned what it was to truly be on fire, brighter than ever in terrible realization. They left her colder than she'd ever been in life: a pile of ash among the remnants of the life they'd built together, torched by her magnificent light.

She had been too good, too perfect. Jessica had meant hope, happiness, and a future with every fragment of her being. An angel, misplaced. A fragment of holy fire, bringing the light of heaven to earth. And yet all too human to withstand the jealously of the light-bringer himself.

"Yes," Lucifer confirms, voice sinfully sweet as his light engulfs Sam's, "but all sparks burn out in the end."

A million eyes winked at him in tandem as Dean began to scream.
