Our Stars

We planned to set sail into the infamous blue
As the sun was setting into the horizon.
And before we knew it, the world was shrouded,
Painted in Darkness, illuminated by our stars.

But then the moon, the treacherous moon
Rose into the sky and you watched her light
And ignored our stars, the stars that had been there
Long before our beloved moon.

Entranced by her, you gazed all night
But then the moon began to fall
As our stars began to fade.
The world opened up again to light.

That Day, I was nothing but a memory.
You only wanted the moon to follow you
Into the infamous blue that we’d almost crossed.
The stars couldn’t have been Dimmer.

But when the moon rose again,
Her light shined for another mere mortal
And I hoped that you’d light up the stars once more
But, aggrieved, you walked along the beach to search.

I watched you leave, hoping you’d turn back.
I looked to the sky to find our precious stars,
But they’d fallen to the ground for me to keep.
I held them close to my heart for years.

I tried to throw them back into the sky.
If you saw them, perhaps you’d come back.
But the beach was empty as well as the sky
All except for that retched moon.

The moon may be beautiful center stage,
But the sky looks naked without our stars.
The moon goes every night with no companions
And I pray one day you come back to gaze into a star-filled sky.
