The Tragic Hero

Said they called for a tragic hero
Broke her back for the city she loved
Kissed her lover goodbye and swept away
To do her duty, to save the day

He held her hand asked her quietly,
Why she would leave him in agony
It wasn’t her battle to fight
And yet she fought it anyway

Don’t cry for me, cry for me
She told him quietly, quietly
Don’t waste your tears on me, tears on me
Don’t worry your life away, life away

But while she fought something went astray
Her lover caught among the disarray
By the time she arrived it was too late
Betrayed by the country she had saved

And He lied there in his own blood
Though she tried to take away his pain
He wiped a salty tear from her face
Whispered to her as he drifted away

Don’t cry for me, cry for me
He told her quietly, quietly
Don’t waste your tears on me, tears on me
Don’t worry your life away, life away

So there she stood, the tragic hero
Symbol of love and bravery
Broke her back for the boy she loved
The only person she couldn’t save
