Dance With the Devil

Rose petals fall
As night starts to call
And I bow my head
To hide the dread
Inside.

He enters the ring,
A firey king,
And his eyes are learning
As the petals are burning
Alive.

His attention draws
To me, and his claws
Beckon me near
And I can't hide my fear
Anymore.

With his smile enlarged,
He prepares to charge,
But I find my strength
And I'll go to great lengths
To win.

Sure, the fire
Isn't what I desire,
But it touches my skin
And this makes him grin
With pleasure.

I deliver a blow
That sounds hallow and low,
And I learn with a start
That it was his heart
I'd killed.

But demons don't die,
And with a terrible cry,
He slashes my knees
And I can just barely see
He's thrilled!

I'm as thrilled as him,
And my smile is grim
As I approach, stand,
Reach for his hand,
And fight.

The devil and I,
We dance through the night,
And each of his screams
Are sweetly earned dreams
Come true.

His yells are soon dying
And we're both crying,
But he appears more weak
So I decide to seek
The end.

We circle each other,
And soon I discover
That there's only one thing
I'll do to bring
Him down.

He's first to attack
But I jump back
And lead him far
Away to the charred
Rose petals.

I hold one up,
Yell, "This is enough!",
Throw it, and watch
As his fire stops
A little.

I grab more
To throw at his core
And he starts to burn out,
But I'm still filled with doubt
Just yet.

He's down on the ground,
So without a sound,
I creep to his side
And he's trying to hide
His face.

I say, "You can't defeat
Something bittersweet
Like dead rose petals;
They're stronger than metal,
You see.

For though they are worn,
They were once born
With much more blessing
You'll ever be getting
At all.

Love always trumps hate,
Which is why God would create
A devil like you:
So you'd get a clue
Who's boss."

The devil moans
And through all of his groans,
I realize it's done,
That Heaven has won;
I'm free!

Though before I go,
I want to know
What to do with the corpse,
But I watch as it morphs
Into dust.

The dust blows away
And I am afraid
That it wasn't the end,
That the ashes will mend
Together.

But the earth need evil
Aside from the devil
For us to realize
With our own eyes
What's good.

I turn then
To see the sun set,
And I know I've survived
My dance through the night
Against hell.
