Stone Soup

There's stew enough to feed us six
Grab a bowl, a spoon, a cup, and sit.

(You may have put a pot to boil
But stone soup is hardly worth the toil...)

Fetch your sisters from there play.

(Don't you mean their job of the day?)

These old hands have prepared a proper feast
Two servings per girl, three for you at least!
I've saved our flour for these last three weeks
Really now, all the bread us six can eat.

(Ma, how long you spend stitchin' some lady's dress
Only to come home and pick up our stupid mess?)

Set the table now, my dear

(How can you smile through that fear?)

When your father comes home we'll have money for more

(Like he'll ever walk back through that door.)

For now, my dear have some stew
I'm sure it will fix us all up new.

(Stone soup may have no meat,
But for now it's all us six can eat.)
