Society Versus The Teenager

We have but one chance to live
And everyone is forced into an unrealistic mold.
The media says you have to be weightless
To survive in Hollywood and stardom.
America is known as an obese country
But nobody sees the starvation that occurs behind closed doors.
Girls have developed terrible eating disorders
And boys have resorted to the consumption of steroids
So they fit society's image of the perfect teenager.
When someone doesn't fit the mold,
They are torn apart with antagonizing comments
And the result is depression.
In public they force smiles and laughter
While they're falling to pieces inside.
When locked in their bedroom,
Teens cry for hours on end.
They begin to use tools that "heal" their pain
And the scars will be visible for eternity.
We're supposed to treasure the life we have
But millions spend life hurt and upset
Because society has ruled out their imperfections.
Just as curiosity killed the cat,
Society has killed the teenager.
