valentines day is only for people who need it

Where is the reason in brightening the sun?
or giving a nun a day in the year assigned to thanking her god
for all he has done?
and where is the sense in telling a farmer that he can take
a well deserved break in the countryside tending to crops,
or giving the dead a strong sleeping pill,
or making a hypochondriac ill
or telling the chronically obese
go on, have a treat!
taking them out to an all-you-can-eat
or saying to Einstein, Maxwell or Bohr
that they should consider the way of things more
for it’s really quite strange that the large won’t agree with the terribly
small.

By what earthly means can I centre a point
already so blindingly central
that now,
under its glare,
all else that falls there is radically dimmed.

How can I focus
on something that already swims in my eyes, fills them up
to the point that I’m blind and it’s all I can see? so why
tell someone who lives on the sun to spend a day in the light?
So no,
We haven’t made plans for tonight.
