Late Afternoon

Lying next to you
Is like observing
A true wonder of the world
Face to face
Your eyelashes catch
Crumbles of the sunlight
Your hair, as tangled and messed
As the sheets around our legs
I smile to no one in particular, so
Enamored by your very innocence
Here, beside me, you are
As peaceful as any quiet sleeper can be
Your mouth twitches
Your nose itches
Eyelids flutter in the midst of
A dream, a fantasy, any imaginative
Alas! You wake, bleary-eyed
A smile spreads slowly
And you examine me too
Here, in our woven cotton fort
I hear your heartbeat, pumping
Through the threads of our
Pillows, and suddenly your
Arms wrap around me
Home is here, warm, safe, and
Quiet, and I know that no matter what
You'll catch me if I fall
And we close our eyes as we smile
I have seen many wonders, if not all, but
Nothing quite compares to
A lazy afternoon in bed with you.

sometimes I wonder what it would be like to wake up next to you.
