Silence Is Deathly

I saw daddy beat you
You didn't do a thing to break free
I wanted to stop him
But sadly I am a bit to small

Climbing the stairs, I walk slowly back to my room
I left the door open and heard you weeping
The door slammed shut and I heard daddy's car start
Then silence fell over the whole house

I opened my eyes only to wake up
To you sitting in the corner of my room
You sat there staring at the door
Not taking any notice I'm awake

I ask you what's wrong which startles you
You tell me that you and daddy are fighting
And that everything will be just fine
But I know it's not because I know what's really going on

I wait on the couch for daddy to come home
You're in the kitchen cooking
I hear a car door slam
And footsteps on the porch

Daddy comes in, I think he's lost it
He stares at me psychotically
His expression softens and he smiles
Then says how's my little girl

I hear something drop in the kitchen
He doesn't move an inch
I ask him to step outside with me
He surprises me by listening

I asked him once I was out there
Daddy, why do you hit mommy?
He looks at me startled
Suprised I brought this up

He says he doesn't know what I'm talking about
But I know he really does
I then see another car pull up
To see it's Uncle Tom

Tom is daddy's twin brother
He's got some drinking issues
He stepped up on the porch
And marches into the house

It's then I realize what's going on
Daddy wasn't beating mommy
It was Uncle Tom
Daddy then realized why I asked that

He then stormed into the house
Grabbed Tom by the shoulder
He shoved him to the wall
And told him to get the fuck out

Tom runs out, scared out of his mind
And he looks at me then mommy
He rubs his eyes
And asks why she didn't say anything

She said she was afraid
She didn't want to start any problems
Daddy then sighs and says
You know, staying silent can be deathly
