Eternal Night

I stand in an open field,
Gazing up into the night.
Never before has it been so vast,
So perfect without clouds or stars.

I gaze up at the sky, waiting.
I wait for a star that never comes
To shine its brilliant face.
I wait, and I wait, and I wait.

And before I know it, the sky is changed.
It begins to grow lighter with
Each passing moment sweeping by.
And there it is, the star of day.

The infinite night had found an end,
As that brilliant star took to the stage.
It was a wondrous thing –
To dance with day in the sudden light.

I watched it for what seemed like eternity.
I watched it travel across the sky.
It could not keep itself still.
I watched it disappear beneath the ground.

Night returned and still brought nothing –
Not a star, not a cloud, nothing but black.
A hole appeared within my heart,
Aching for that luminous star.

And yet, it never came again.
No light, no warmth, no sight of day.
I returned to my eternal night.
Growing fearful of the shadows.

How sad, how foolish, pathetic am I
To have fallen with awe at daylight.
That star does not change nor is it fazed
While my whole world depends on it.

Now years have come and they have past
And I don’t forget the brilliant star.
I still remember the feeling, the sight.
And I am sure that it remembers nothing.

Darkness is all that I have known.
Not a star or a cloud grace my sky.
Shadows surround me and shroud me.
I miss that precious star each day…
Lost in this eternal night.
