Silhouettes in the Night

Silhouettes in the Night
Eric Berger

When I close my eyes, I see naught but shadows,
Silhouettes, shades from long before I knew you.
They dance before my eyes; a constant reminder,
Of the double-edged sword, the brightest of hues.

Why must love be so utterly enigmatic?
A cruel hoax of the fates, a conundrum no doubt.
Falling in and out of this overflowing ecstasy,
It consumes all our lives, as our fervor burns out.

Tread carefully, tread slowly; don’t let down your guard.
For false love will find you, ensnare you in a flash.
The game, at first fun will soon smolder to ashes.
Leaving you pensive; can my heart be so slashed?

When I close my eyes, I see dark blue shadows,
Silhouettes, shades from long before I knew you.
They dance before my mind; a constant reminder,
Of the double-edged sword, the strongest of glues.

Life’s brilliant and rare, and so must be respected,
And love is a force that can rend it to shreds.
That will leave you deserted on an island of misery,
Yet, I cannot deny there’s euphoria at head.

So don’t be a cynic, that’s brought no elation,
Living hatefully, isolated brings no man peace.
Just walk as on glass, lest your brittle heart shatter.
And find surreal comfort ‘til your mind does cease.

When I close my eyes, I see naught but shadows,
Silhouettes, shades from long before I knew you.
They dance before my soul; a constant reminder,
Of the double-edged sword, the brightest of hues.

It's my first poem that I'm making public, so I hope it's not repulsively saccharine. Enjoy!
