The camera is the key to immortality

The Chechen winter was cold, the snow was dirty and crudely trampled and packed around them. The three Russian soldiers, all but maybe eighteen or nineteen years old, just boys.

But they were in a mans world now, surrounded by the death hungry woods where their comrades lay. Some were bleeding out in the snow, others were strewn in pieces about the enviroment. Only these three boy soldiers were left.

To ask anything was met with a slap to the face or a knee to the gut. They looked beaten, not from putting up a fight, but for just being who they were. There is no sound here, only swollen bloodied lips move, but no words seem to come out. Their enemy seem to treat them well, until a butt stroke to the one soldiers head ends that thought for both of us.

They shiver even though they are wrapped in olive drab pea coats and scarves, one even has a beanie cap on his bleeding head. It is that fear, that fear of the sickly unknown. A prisoner, hostage, target practice, bayonet practice, retribution, anger management, grief stricken? Which one would their captors pick?

They move them along now, the last one with the bleeding head and the bloodshot blue eyes, he just stares at that camera that is recording them and their defeat, them at their most vulnerable. He stares as if to let his soul, his whole being, soak into that camera so that somehow, a piece of him will still exist somewhere on youtube or CNN, or anything damnit!

A slap to the head moves him on as he winces, the blood soaked beanie and the torn left ear.
The captor that struck him started patting his wound, then slapping it one more time before moving away from him. He looks back at the camera, his blue eyes pleading, a gasping silent scream, to exclaim, "I'm fucking here! I'm not dead just yet! I'm here damnit!"
And the video ends..

You stare at the "replay' icon and just stare. It doesn't matter how long ago this took place, or when it was posted. Those captors never intended on filming his death and creating a phoenix. The camera made him immortal, forever etched into your mind, and all the others who watched. For even though we see his life for only minute and see him die in an instant, his final stares did their work, he will never die.

Just something deep about what was seen. When you break it down, you've got someones last moments forever captured on video, even if a name is never known, and he's "that dude" you still won't forget that you saw what happened to them.

nuff said.
