How the World Really Is

When I was just a child I watched my world crumble down
saw my parents grow older with each moment that passed
struggling to feed five kids who never knew the meaning of 'hungry'
because of their love, their determination and sacrifice
I waded through a sea of self-medication and blood
to reach the edge of the world
waited to see if a childhood friend I loved dearly
would fall into the hole she dug herself
I've stayed up with a million sunrises
watched the Twin Towers go up in flames when I was four years old-
the first time I ever saw my father weep
But despite the anger, the hurt and the rage
broiling inside the very earth itself
the inherent goodness in people never fails to amaze me.
I've had my life saved thanks to people online
who've never even met me
seen hundreds of people band together
to help one person in need.
This world is corrupted and broken
but the idea of good
balances out all the bad.
