I'm sorry, Miss
But you remind me of myself
From your long brown hair covering your eyes,
Dark brown eyes
The kind that would look tired and lost
Without any makeup on,
To your black and white checkered dress
Over legs too thin covered by black tights
Yes Miss, you remind me of myself
While you sit reserved
Over there on the opposite side of the underground
You look on edge even, nervous somehow
As you look in your large shopping bags
And check your receipt several times
It's almost as if you went on a shopping spree
And you're realizing now just how much you spent
But you do, Miss
You remind me of myself
Maybe how I'll be in five or ten years
You're quiet and withdrawn
And thin, maybe even a little too much
Almost as if you're trying too hard to be
But most people wouldn't notice that
I'm sorry, Miss
I'm staring too long
Because you notice
And you smile weakly and look away quickly
Just as I do
But you remind me of myself,
I think as you rush off through the sliding glass doors
Struggling with your oversized bags
Never to be seen again
