Ocean Lungs

I wish I could draw air
into the bottomless lungs
that are tucked behind my
crooked ribs,
beside my lonely
livewire heart
that beats so tirelessly -
tentative tandem

I wish I could breathe in
my finite breaths
forever, without
skipping a beat
until my bottomless lungs
have had their fill
and no longer clutch, greedy
for stale air

I wish I could stop
dreaming of open fields
and empty cities
where I can go on running
until my tired feet have
had enough and
run out of endless pavement
