Like Hemingway

Like Hemingway,
are we destined to fall – follow
in our parents’ footsteps?

My sister is a nurse,
like my mother before her.
Does this mean I am meant
to drift and fade and
drown in my self-hate?
Am I my father?

He – we leave huge footprints.

Like Hemingway,
is this the shotgun’s barrel against my teeth?
