Precedence

Dear Mr. Charming,
Could you please do me a favor
And not sweep me off my feet?
I’d rather bypass perfection
And trade it for simplicity.
I appreciate your interest,
Your desire to win me over,
But you live beyond my galaxy
Of the mundane and ordinary.
I like things that way.

Mother, please don’t tell me
That I can do better
Than the quirky boy with glasses
And tattered, frizzled hair.
He needs some motivation,
But his potential is there.
I like him that way.

Please remind me
Why my standards need some tuning.
My head has been filled with them,
My senses, brainwashed,
And now, only now
Has my heart decided to
Take a stand for my happiness.

My heart is deciding for me.

I like it like that.
