the Forest

We wander, the Lost Girls,
Over discarded bricks
And broken-down fences.

We climb through windows and cracks,
Past bathtubs and chairs.

We stop to smell the daises,
To dance on concrete puzzle pieces,
To remember our way back.

We push into the brambles,
Between the branches,
Over the fallen logs.

We find what we've been looking for.

Twigs snapping underfoot,
Breath catching in our throats,
The shadows swallow us whole.
