The Soft Heart of a Beast

Through the dark forest he prowls
Searching for his prey.
Through long white fangs he growls.
He will eat today.

In the shadows he hides
His wild eyes scanning the skies.
Among the darkness he confides.
Until a small child cries.

His licks his chops with a wolfy grin
He lunges from the bushes to see his prize
Furry chest heaving with the pride of a win.
Then he saw the creature’s eyes.

Bright blue orbs shining in the night.
Nose twitching as he lowers his head.
The little thing stopped its yell of fright.
He could not strike this poor thing dead.

He heard shouts echo through the trees.
Bounding in the bushes he watches with interest.
A mother runs up and falls down on her knees
And pulls the child to her breast.

Letting out a sigh,
He slinked away.
His morals were too high
Eh, he can eat another day.
