Heart of Steel

I’ve been told I’ve got
A heart of steel
‘Cause I don’t get scared at the movies
When they playin’ a scary one.
I’ve been told I’ve got
A heart of steel
‘Cause I don’t fret and breakdown
When the world collapses.
I’ve been told I’ve got
A heart of steel
‘Cause I don’t cry like momma
When she and daddy start to cry.
I’ve been told I’ve got
A heart of steel
‘Cause I don’t apologize
When I’ve been so mean to someone.
I’ve been told I’ve got
A heart of steel
‘Cause I keep running
When my body tells me to stop.
I’ve been told I’ve got
A heart of steel
‘Cause I keep fighting
When someone tells me it ain’t worth it.
But no one’s told me
I’ve got a heart of gold
‘Cause they can’t see
That the steel is there to protect
My delicate, loving heart
Of gold.

I choke back the tears
When I see my momma cry.
I clench the seat with my dear life
When I ride in the car.
I shiver at night
When I remember what I saw.
All them memories that have scared me,
Made me cover my heart with
A shield of steel.

Probably on of my favorite older poems I've written. I wrote this after my friend deemed me "The girl with a heart of steel" after we came back from the movies.
