Oversized Sweater

She loves to wear her oversized sweaters
Each stitch is a reminder that this is her safe haven
She turns to it when she can’t handle life
When the world is unbearable and her ambience is craven
And she’s tempted to break, hurriedly clasping the knife
Her conscience is pleading while the demons are screaming
An ongoing battle ever present in her head.

She’ll abandon the knife and collapse to the ground
Heart wrenching cries escaping her soul
Makeup running down her face
Reminding her that nothing solid ever truly stays
Then a scrap of fabric will catch her eye
A newfound passion set ablaze
She’ll rise from her sorrow that’s in puddles below

Taking the first steps of a sudden hope
She’s drawn to the fabric that is holding her soul
She slips it on and feels the comfort
The stitches of fabric caress old scars
She forgets for a moment her anguish and sorrow
As she sits on her balcony gazing up at the stars
And allows the oversized sweater to soothe her soul.
