Not So Long Ago

Not So Long Ago

I looked at the calendar.
I had counted the days
until it was possible I would see you again.

You came home from college each weekend.
Each weekend, I failed to see you.
Each weekend, you had homework.
Each weekend, you didn't finish homework.
Because you had new pictures of you four-wheeling,
or hanging out with other friends.

We were not dating.
We were friends who kissed.
A summer fling.

You say you still like me.
I still like you too.

But I started to miss you.
Did you ever miss me?

It didn't matter.
I stopped caring.

I went to Homecoming
with a guy who cared.
A guy who was there.
