Broken Seams

He walks the halls like a ghost without purpose
Surrounded by broken illusions of kindness
Fake smiles, fake laughs, fake friends

Girls hang out with him just to look cool
They color his reputation vibrantly
So many layers of happy colors
Hides the broken seams underneath

A flawless thread that had once fixed his heart
Now had shredded it into a billion pieces
A few cans of beer, a few shots of liquor
And his one real friend was gone

A busted windshield and a crooked stop sign later
And everything was lost
Replaced by a lifetime's worth of guilt

He remembers her small funeral
With the sun burning down on his back
Attempting to warm his cold empty stares
The quiet voices that forgave him and tried to console him
The eyes that burned with hatred and exposed their unspoken blame

He remembers her scream most clearly
Her frightful eyes round and widened
Her desperate cling on his arm
Shouting things he couldn't hear

No one hears his muted screams
Sees his tearless cries at night
Feels the cold of his soulless heart
Looks him in his unseeing eyes to know he's forever broken beyond repair

They move on without him
Building on their hopes and dreams
Chasing after what they want and feel they need
While he stays awake at night
Staring up at an empty ceiling
And counting seconds to his last breath
