Spring's Arrival

The naked trees stand
Tall and frozen as the cold
Winter air bites at the man
Walking hunched over through the park

His old, moth eaten trench coat
Hangs loosely around his shoulders
As he tries to find solace from the harsh
Biting winds billowing around

A little boy watches from afar
As the man trails his frost-bitten
Hands across the trunks of the trees
His eyes widen when he sees
The trees naked branches suddenly
Grow lush emerald green leaves and
Flowers white as the melting snow
Still on the ground

The man continues to walk through the park
His hand still gliding across the rough bark
Of the trees allowing more life to spring back
Into them

The little boy runs up to the man
“Excuse me, Mr.” he says.
The man looks down and smiles.
“Yes?” he answers.
“How do you make the green grow?” the boy asks.
The man smiles. “Magic,” he simply answers.

The boy giggles as he walks alongside the man
As he continues with his task
When the man touches one tree in particular
A beautiful, colorful butterfly emerges
From a hidden cocoon amongst the branches

The boy laughs as the butterfly’s wings
Flutter against his cheek before taking off
Into the still overcast, cloudy sky
The man looks down at the little boy
“Spring has arrived,” he says
Before shrugging off the moth-eaten
Trench coat and spreading his
Luscious white wings and taking off
Into the sky as the little boy
Watches from his spot by the tree
