The Moment You Change

You know that feeling you get after your heart is broken?
After all of the tears you could cry have fallen,
After your stomach finally stops aching from the pain,
after you finally shut out the memory of the moment it shattered.

It's like the calm of a storm.

But, much more than that...
It's the moment you change.
You finally numb yourself.
All you can think about is the next time it will happen.
You don't know if you could handle it again, but for some reason, you go on.
You kill a part of yourself, shut it down, so that that part of you will never hurt again.
And every time you break, another piece of you is gone,
Until finally, you're an empty vessel.
You don't have the strength to keep hoping anymore.
You accept you're one of those people that everyone leaves.
You accept it, and you survive the rest of your life,
Forever remembering the one who took the last ounce of your hope.
You continue breathing, but you're entirely lifeless,
Just a shell of the hopeful soul you once were.
