The Last Walk

And as I make my way outside once again
I am welcomed by a cold breeze pounding upon my
Chest, knees, and fingertips
as i walk, the sidewalk looks up at me
i know this sidewalk
for i have walked it many times
but, this would be my last

I pass things i love
scenery that's unmistakable
and moments i will explicitly remember
linger in my mind

I looked behind me to see
broken promises and regrets
hanging in the shadows of the icy footsteps i left behind

The pale sun shone through the
hibernating maples
their branches no longer adorned
for the cold winter stole their leaves
a long time ago
i walked on-
observing the barren maples for the last time

The metal was frigid to the touch
chilling my bones
i grew anxious
feverish thoughts swam back and forth
through my mind
my fingers snapped
my feet tapped

Deep breathe, calm
ha! a pointless word it seemed
in that moment i closed my eyes
thinking for one last time
i watched my world explode-
that sidewalk
those old maples
the stories once told
the faces once seen
then the ice below-

But, God, was i exhausted
