The Power of One

It was a beautiful day,
In this nice little town,
The summer breeze was gentle,
The perfect day to hit the town.
One woman,
Who wore a bright blue hat,
A faded blue dress,
And some second-hand shoes,
Walked to the store to get some food.
A man,
Who wore a fancy black suit,
Had his hair nice and trimmed,
And a new pair of slacks,
Came up to this woman,
The one in the bright blue hat.
He said to her,
"Come 'ere little missy,"
"Well are'nt you just fine"
The woman turned away from him,
Avoiding his cold stare.
He said,
"Hey, I'm talking to ya,
Don't go away."
He grabbed her arm,
Pulling her in,
"Now Missy, you's gunna be my maid."
The woman didn't want this,
She looked at him,
And with fury in her chest,
She slapped him.
She said,
"Never."
Well as you might imagine,
This made a scene,
Everyone who was around,
Came running.
They encircled her,
ANd filled her head with screams,
Taunting her,
Hitting her,
SPitting on her.
And she cried
"WON'T SOMEBODY HELP ME!"
But all them folk do is yell back
Stinging her soul with hurtful words
'Who do you think you are you dumb---"
And that man,
The man with the black suit,
The man with the ego bigger than the rest,
Slammed her face,
Her heart,
With that word full of hate,
Making her feel like less of a person,
Making her feel like scum,
Like she was the dirt on his shoe,
Like she didn't belong.
But she knew,
She knew,
Deep down in her heart,
She was better than him,
She was worth something.
So that lady,
In the bright blue hat,
With the dark complexion,
Told her self,
From that day forward,
She was not going to let no one,
And she meant no one,
Take away her self worth,
Her pride,
Who she was,
And that she was going to stand up,
Not only for herself,
But to her sisters in need,
And that's when she decided,
She said,
"No, I aint gunna be your maid."
And with the devil in his eyes,
That man,
The one in the black suit,
Look at the woman and said,
"What you say to me,---"
And he raised his fist,
With his heart full of rage,
And his mind full of evil,
And lay it upon her,
Her beautiful face,
And knocked the woman,
The woman with the bright blue hat and darling eyes,
Right of her feet,
Right into the dirt.
And as she lied there,
In the pile of dirt,
She thought to herself,
'Never again.'

To think that women back in the day were treated like this, with such cruelty, breaks my heart. I wish somehow, we could go back in time and try to prevent it all from happening. I know we can't, but, we can always try to prevent it from ever happening again.
