The Fountain of Living Water

Through the wilderness I tread,
My destination clear in my mind.
Fantasies and hopes flow through my head,
I’m leaving the cares of this world behind.

Many people search for the Fountain of Youth,
To have their years replenished and their skin soft and smooth.
But only if they knew the truth,
Their tempers and minds would not be soothed.

I search for the Fountain of Living Water,
The gift of Jesus to the faithful at heart.
I want to drink from that fountain as his daughter,
My life for Jesus, new, I’ll start.

I unroll my map to examine my destination.
I’ve not far to go to reach the end of my trek.
My heart beats quickly with anticipation,
My body is weary and my clothes are a wreck.

I push aside some branches and gasp with awe,
Before me was an enormous stone door.
My eye widen as I stare at its gaping maw.
This work of art I could not help but adore.

Carvings flowed over the hardened surface,
Intricate depictions of the travels and trials,
God’s people searching for his forgiving embrace.
I reach out a trembling hand and touch the tiles.

At my touch, the door begins to glow.
I try to snatch my hand back but it will not shift.
Then a voice rings out, deep, steady, and slow.
“Who are you my child? Do you deserve this holy gift?”

The voice penetrates to my very soul,
I fall to my knees searching for words.
The shaking in my voice is hard to control,
My voice rings out with the clarity of a bird’s

“I am a sinner and I do not deserve glory,
My life is full of trespasses and pain.
But Lord I believe this is the end of my story,
And now I want to start again.”

The glowing ceases and I take back my hand,
Warmth flows over me as the gates swing in.
Slowly I rise from my knees to stand,
My heart soars and I begin to grin.

There the Fountain stands gleaming with light,
It shimmers with the magnificence of a thousand suns.
Quickly I bow down before the Lord’s might,
Then to the edge of the fountain I run.

Glittering water flows from the top,
And trickles down into my hand.
I turn my hands up and drink each drop,
My compression of emotion I can no longer stand.

Tears of happiness stream down my face,
And I look up to see the Lord.
His presence making my soul inside me race.
“You, my child, I have always adored.”

He lifts me from my knees into a warm embrace.
His warmth encloses me in a comforting glow.
Finally, in the world, I have found my place,
And my tears of happiness continue to flow.

“Follow me all the days of your life,
With devotion praise my name.”
“Lord you will keep me free from strife,
My love for you burns as an undying flame.”
