Tragic Love Story

For Annie… XOXO

Waves roll up, washing away the sentence so carefully inscribed in the sand.
She holds onto you, laughing as the words spell out something silly.
Her laugh is like an angel’s voice in your ear
And you look back at her, holding her closely.

Waves roll up, washing away the words delicately laced in the sand.
Her smile is like the medicine you never seem to have enough of
The glint in her eyes like heaven itself.
She pulls you onto the sand, happy and oblivious.

Waves roll up, washing away the word scrawled lazily on the sand.
She leans against you, and you feel some warmth in all this cold
She is your soul, your entire being, the bane of your existence.
But you cannot stop the tear from streaking down her cheek.

Waves roll up, washing away the letter hastily thrown onto the sand.
Your body hurts and you feel tired, but you beg her to take you out one last time.
You close your eyes; the sound of her reading to you and the waves lulls you to sleep,
A deeper sleep than you are used to—a sleep you can’t wake up from.

Waves roll up, but this time, there is nothing written in the sand to wash away.
The beach is empty, the clouds altering the churning sea to a dull grey.
Far away, a tragic love story is being written into the sand
But not here, for one has already been written.
