Ode to Sleep

Eyelids droop,
Darkness follows,
Deep into the shallow void,
Falling into slumber,
Earth is falling,
Melting away,
No cares,
No worries,
Safely hidden in the realm of the unknown,
Black shadows of nothingness,
Emotions emancipated,
No thinking,
Responsibility gone,
Until,
Iris shimmers under morning light,
Gasping,
Pressure fills my skull,
Fills my heart,
Emotions flooding back,
Responsibility presents itself,
Forcing itself upon me,
Anxiety creeps up,
Teasing,
Mocking,
The day is bright and new,
Yet,
Sleep tempts me,
Begging me to return,
Return to the world of tranquility,
And not of heartbreak.
