Rock Bottom

There is an old saying:
When you hit the very bottom
you cannot sink any lower.
That is why,
when people lie
too long in the well,
they drown.
Nevertheless,
there's a fine point in life
if you begin to rise again;
perhaps a miracle,
or merely a drift in current.
You might not smile at first
but there is a little spark
that enters your eyes at last.
From there you will hold fast
to every feeling of rising
you can possibly get.
And you never admit to yourself
that it would be so much easier
to fall back down,
to let the water
cover your ears,
and never resurface.
And even when
you are swimming
strongly at the top,
you know now what happens
when the drive to float is gone.
It's hard
that there is no doubt.
But at least now you know
what lies down there
at the bottom of the well.
And at least in light water
you can see the monsters
before they come.
