It Speaks For Itself

It’s dark outside, the world moves at a steady pace
Looks can be deceiving, it’s not all greenery
For what we’ve gone through, it’s kind of a disgrace
We’re still broken and we’ve conjured up a twisted scenery

I remember once I saw a woman with light brown hair and green eyes
She was frail and tiny thing, and I asked her why
She said, “I asked what beauty was, and they said ‘thin’”
And the night after I cried, because the same day she gave in
Even through all that, above it all
Even after she took the fall
After the tears and the pain,
I could still say,
“She was way more beautiful than that”

A few years later and she still visits me in my sleep
The ghosts of a lost past have taken my heart to keep
I gutted myself until there was nothing left
I’ve danced on the boundaries between life and death

In my uneven, starved breaths, I recover to find my purpose
I carve away the negatives that scream that I’m worthless
I prove to an anxious God that his methods aren’t working
I work every day for a greater good to relieve the souls suffering

But in the end, we’ve still lost
Hurt glazes over a nation like a cold, winter frost
Through all our efforts though, we’ve still lost
And what was the cost?
A girl hates her body and a boy paints his wrist red
Our young are dying; we’re bearing our losses with dread
Three died by suicide, two ran with razors instead
It’s too late, for you can’t save the dead
A mother loses her boy to an overdose, and she copes with liquid comfort
A family is broken and a father leaves his son to hurt
And through it all
Through all the sugar coating
All the cover ups
I’ll ask,
“Is this really what we wanted?”

But even past all the diet pills, make-up, blades, tear stains, harsh words, abuse, trauma, expectations, fear, and silence
I can still say,
“You are more beautiful than that”

So here’s to the girls with infinite potential, but can’t see it
Here’s to the boys who strive to be tough, but bleed in it
Here’s to all the ruined lovers
And all the lost mothers
Here’s to the fighters
The soldiers
The winners
And even the ones you would call “losers”

“You are beautiful
And you are worth it”

So take the time to look back over the ugly girl
Take a step back from your superficial world
Double take a boy who you thought was stupid
And think before you speak and rue it

Because I can promise you
I can guarantee you
If you take a glance and notice their wrist
You’ll get a glimpse of what’s gone amiss
Their physical pain and the scars on their hearts
Take a look, for analyzing is only the start
So don’t doubt it for a second
And please don’t forget it
That they are beautiful
And they are worth it
