A Passage Unread

Have you ever lost someone who mattered?
Leaving you alone, abandoned, your soul is tattered.
The new, painful reminder that life is brief,
You cherish past moments—whether bitter or sweet.
How could you take your life by your own hands?
Were your knees so weak that alone you could not stand?
So many feelings buried deep inside of me,
Like a sleeping dragon that I choose not to see.
Regret for apparently not doing all that I could,
If, somehow, I could change the past, just know I would.
Hate because you left us in a moment of weakness,
For thinking your life was worthless, a matter of cheapness.
Hate at myself for not saying all that I feel,
Even now, in this moment, it doesn’t seem real.
Fear that now that you’re gone your life will have been for naught,
Your name in the wind, just a whisper to be sought.
Knowledge that I will ensure you are remembered so long as I am alive,
A warning to those lost in the dark, your soul is here, thought your body I can’t revive.
Your body may have gone to dust, but at times I feel you with me
Your laughter I cannot hear, but I have memories which I can see
“Gone but never forgotten,” they said,
A moment in time, a break in the song, a passage left unread.
