A Sailor

A sailor I had bid a sweet good-bye
Set forth on waves of dreams and hopefulness
Beneath the moon he stared up at the sky
A glist'ning orb, reflecting thoughtless bliss

For underneath that same dear light I stood
Eyes wide, face turned from darkness in the night
While deep desires tempted me forth from good
Yet, faithful I remained with all my might

And on that shore, I waited many years
A letter, dripping love, clung to my breast
Beloved sailor claimed both prayers and fears
Each day, no news sent flutters through my chest

As time elapsed, once-peaceful nights grew long
My sailor reappeared to my surprise
Not over seas, led home by winds full strong,
But in the gentle folds of my son's eyes
