How You Say It

I try to take you
And push you into my own definition
Of love.
I grab you
And wrestle you into my heart
Quietly.
I attempt to chain you
To my ever-growing knowledge
Of life.
Yet you exceed all of these things
Without speaking a single word.
Sounds and syllables drop
Quickly from your happy smile
And I let myself drift,
Not focusing on what you say but how
YOU
Say it.
The same words are said every day, everywhere
But there is something special about
The inflection and warmth of your voice.
A heated kiss, a teasing touch can
Sear itself into my
Body,
But your words imprint themselves on
My soul like so many gemstones pressed
Into clay.
And a soul so imprinted by love
Will never be the same.
