Today You Told Me Her Name

She sat three seats in front of me
in Microbiology, junior year.
She worked the shift after mine
Tuesday nights at the thrift store.
She wore the same color dress as me
the night of prom, senior year.
She was always the nicest girl in the room,
and usually the prettiest.
She helped me with my Calculus homework
and never lost her patience.
She was always quick to forgive,
and even to forget.
I've never heard her raise her voice
or lose her temper with anyone.
I've always admired her,
even aspired to be more like her.

So tell me, if I was more like her,
would you have thought twice
about shattering us both?
The night you forgot you already had a girl,
would you have changed your mind,
escorted her to her car,
and then said goodnight?
You and I had been together for
two and a half years,
but what did that matter
the one night you decided
I wasn't enough,
you had to have her
too.
