Nightlight

when we were young we were so scared of what was in the dark
we flooded our rooms with plastic stars and artificial lights
games were made of keeping the monsters from our dreams
we slept with our doors open so the hall light could seep in

as we grew we accepted the darkness as a part of us
tried to block all light out of our rooms, our artificial nights
the darkness has a way of settling inside of your body
that little heavy place under your ribs is bursting with it

we forgot the way daylight made us feel safe, at home
the monsters in the dark crept in through our blinded eyes
we didn't notice it, at first, we thought it was just growing up
they found a way to our already darkened minds, there they stayed

people saw the coldness in our eyes, and thought of themselves
nobody realises what happens when you grow up
when you forget about the light and the sun, and embrace night
we had become the monsters we were so afraid of
