Heartworms

I thought I had it taken care of a long time ago,
That feeling I get when I'm with you alone,
But the treatment must have failed, or you must have learned,
How to thrive being my little heartworm.

I can't get your face out of my head,
Or the way you used to lie face down in our bed,
Or how your arm around my shoulders always felt like lead.
My little heartworm is far from dead.

I was willing to give up my life,
But I'm not willing now.
I have to get you out of my head somehow.
Oh, little heartworm, kill me now.

I thought I had you snuffed out,
I thought you were gone,
But your embers burn long and strong.
Oh, my heartworm, leave me alone.
