The Graduation Day

The sound of pomp
And circumstance played
From the lips of the band
The sound of the choir
As they sing a farewell song
Standing hand in hand
Tears that manage to sneak out and away
These are the things that take me through the day

This day that will dawn
Leave people in tears
Children will come
But depart beyond their years
Something so sobering
Yet draws emotion
Like moth to a flame
That is the pain
Of the graduation day

Some children are fearful
While others stand tall
But no one is ready
For when the caps fall
They symbolize this:
Another group has come
More children-made adults
With the setting of the sun

Though of course we do know
That not all adults are mature
And some former children
Will be unchanged thereafter
Not one of these people
I don't believe they'll find their happily ever after

Life is a battle
Not easily won
But I pray for those friends
Who have left at the setting of the sun
They were inspirations
And some still are
A few were just funny
And that's all
They didn't fly far

But whether you left with a scholarship won
Or simply a paper saying you did what had to be done
There are those that hold you close in their hearts
Now go out and make us proud
You children who've become adults

This was liberating to write, as I am already missing my seniors, namely the ones in my choir. I don't want to walk into school next year and have them not be there. I wish them luck.
