Dystopia

Scars in the sky.
Eyes alive with flame.
Same strangers; different town.
Down a vacant, lonely street,
Meet a man without a name.
‘Shame about the weather.’

Whether or not you know it’s true,
You say a prayer before you sleep.
Keep a stiff upper lip.
Slip back into bed and dream;
Seems they’re nicer than the truth.
Ruthlessly pure.
Sure enough, they were right.

Night brings no relief.
Belief in the truth is wrong.
Long gone are the happy days;
Pays to be in the know.
Go now, sing a happy song.
Strong and pure of heart.

Start again in another time.
Crimes of the past can be put to rest.
Best to wait and see
Before you fling the curtains wide.
Hide your hope - it’s what they crave.
Bravery dies;
Lies are currency behind bars.
