Choices

Into the forest, she said with a fright
We have to hurry and stay out of sight
They’re coming, she says with a quiver in her voice
Apparently you didn’t make the right choice
So now you must run and I shall aid
I shouldn’t have helped, I should have stayed
I made my choice and you did too
We must stay hidden until they’re through
What did you say to make them mad
Never before has it been this bad
She looked at me with fear in her eyes
I took a breath and told her lies
They wanted me to kill my own
To beat them to death with a stone
Inside my head I thought of the truth
Of how they wanted me to meet a woman at a booth
Kill her, they said, when the time is right
When the sun has gone down and it’s turned to night
Homicide is a crime from where I’m from
I can’t help but think of how I should have succumbed
No one would have known but them and me
Maybe they’ll let me go if I just plea
I don’t want to take an innocent life
Especially the one who’s saving my life…
