City Night

Listening closely on the corner of a street
somewhere in a city with people out late
and the smell of the air when stars come out
and warm winds pick up from the south
putting a heat to the stale cold air.
Across the road, and the neon signs,
near a fountain with waterproof lights
a saxophone plays a song into the night.
You can close your eyes and picture
the notes drifting into that dark air
blazing with the passion of dusk
when the people come out late and
you can stand on the corner of the street
with no one to stop you and no one to greet.
That's the magic of the city sometimes;
below the summer fountains and neon signs
with music playing into the night.
