On the Beach at Midnight

The streets are lonely at midnight.
A single lamp illuminates two feet
Of empty pavement.

Headlights and car engines
Fill the void
Of her endless nightly drive.

Stop the car and step out
Into the cool, August night air.
The breeze is cold and clean
But no one is there to keep her warm.

Soft sand beneath nimble toes
And the breeze
Washes her face again.

The small waves crash lightly
Against the East Coast shore.
She leans back on her elbows
And gazes up at the wide
Velvet painted sky,
Dotted with jewels.

But to the left, on the horizon
An artificial glow catches her eye.
And instantly,
She becomes more entranced
By the city lights in the distance
Than the natural beauty
Displayed out before her.

My mom took my brother and sister and me to the beach at midnight to watch the meteor shower and as I was laying there, this poem just sort of came to mind and I wrote it down in my phone to save until I got home.
